Study Tour: Exposure Trip of Youths to Firsthand Marine Turtle Conservation Program
April 28-30, 2016, San Juan, La Union, Philippines
The exposure trip exposed the active youths of Sarangani in the firsthand marine turtle conservation program run by the Coastal Underwater Resource Management Action (CURMA). It taught the participants the proper hatchery management practices, beach patrolling, proper responses during marine turtle stranding and encounter, and much more. The youths were also exposed to an organic upland farm to let them understand that conservation is a ridge to reef approach. During the trip, they were taught about project proposal writing and pitching and tasked to conduct the same training they experienced in the exposure trip in Sarangani Province.
The activity was initiated by the youth participants of PaWeCan Do It Exposure trip in San Juan, La Union that aimed to equip the active young citizens of Maitum the necessary theoretical and technical knowledge about marine turtle conservation. The training includes topics on The Ridge-to-River-to-Reef Connectivity, Basic Turtle Bioecology, Status, Management and Threats, Proper Handling of Marine Turtles, and Legal Framework for Conservation, all of which were taken from the seminar received from CURMA in the said exposure trip. This is done in the belief that the youths are the forerunners and leaders of conservation and that should there be any training for the continuity of healthy marine turtle population, it is they who should receive it.
